"There's no such thing as Thunder Road" is in fact a false statement, it's both a Robert Mitchum film and a great, filmic Bruce Springsteen song that endures a thousand listens and possibly being overplayed. Sometimes "classics" are classics for a reason. This is a little bit of a pisstake of those big arm waving "outsider anthems" that get played in stadiums and the soulless abbatoir gigs you'd just LOVE a cut of the ticket takings even as you sneer at it, but one with more than a hint of hope for their redemptive power.
lyrics
And if I ever leave this town will you forget my face?
Will I be another one who vanished without trace?
If I ever leave this town will you forget my name
Will I be another one who vanished all the same?
So what'd you say we leave tonight
Take the back roads out of town
I'll never beat The Boss I know
But it beats being beaten down
So what'd you say we leave tonight
The future's blank but it's still bright
And this just feels so wrong
That knowing me it's right
The likes of us who leave this town
They never come back
Until their dreams are dragged down
And they have to backtrack
The likes who leave this town
Well they're not you and me
So before we are dragged down
Tonight's the time to flee
So what'd you say we leave tonight
Take the back roads out of town
I'll never beat The Boss I know
But it beats being beaten down
So what'd you say we leave tonight
The future's blank but it's still bright
And this just feels so wrong
That knowing me it's right
Is right! Fear of failure will get you nowhere, you have to be a little mad to succeed. You have to take a chance, and I'm the only chance you've got, so take me.
So what'd you say we leave tonight
Take the back roads out of town
I'll never beat The Boss I know
But it beats being beaten down
Forget all you were ever told
There's no such thing as Thunder Road
And this just feels so wrong
That knowing me it's right
